Start a Partnership Conversation

We are really glad to hear you are actively seeking ways to address the lack of appropriate representation of Black journalists in the UK media as well as be part of the fight against institutional racism in this country.

It is unfortunately something that cannot be resolved overnight and will require consistent effort. We have drawn up a list of ways we hope you would be happy to collaborate with us in order to improve our industry.

Have a read of the below and let us know which one of these appeal to your organisation, then we can discuss a way forward:

  1. Mentoring: your journalists can mentor any of our members in a one-to-one system, whereby they organise catch-ups at their own convenience, during which they  can discuss their experiences, career advice, CVs, pitching etc.
  2. Open newsrooms: once a year you open your newsroom to recent journalism and media graduates for a few hours, detailing your news agenda and workflow, as well as offering recruitment advice.
  3. Collaborate with us on events: we host a collaborative event on a mutually decided topic. This could be in the form of:
    1. Panel event – where speakers from various organisations share their experiences/give advice
    2. Pitching sessions – attendees pitch their ideas or things their working on and get feedback
    3. Career workshops – guests give practical advice on CVs, job applications, career paths, story ideas etc
    4. Training sessions – your journalist gives training on their specialist topic e.g. covering environmental issues

Kindly note that all event collaborations with We Are Black Journos require a partnership fee, applicable to organisations seeking direct engagement in this capacity. The fee is determined based on the organisation’s budget and will be discussed prior to any detailed event planning – please see price tiers at end of document.

  1. Attend our events: guarantee a representative from your organisation to at least half of the events we run a year. They can then share anything they’ve learned about improving diversity and inclusivity within your newsrooms with the rest of your team.
  2. Job openings: you can send any roles you’re recruiting for to info@weareblackjournos.org and we can add it to our monthly newsletter.
  3. Commissioning: an area a lot of media organisations need to be more transparent with, in order to attract more Black journalists. We urge you to share your commissioning process and contacts with us for distribution to our members.
  4. Freelance pool: do you have one? Please let us know! A great directory to send our community to.

Whether you’re looking to host an event, sponsor a grant, or run a digital campaign with us, we’d love to hear your ideas.

You can copy the easy-to-use template below to structure your proposal. Because WABJ is a CIC, all collaborations are paid initiatives – please include your estimated budget range or request our rate card!
